The E8231s is a unique phone in that it is the first in its model to use an unlocked form, which makes it the perfect device for customers who often travel internationally. A few months ago, we reviewed the GSM Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727, which earned our Editor’s Choice award largely on its merits of being an unlocked GSM device. Now another carrier has an unlocked alternative to offer, this time from AT&T with their E8231s 1 Unlock DC Unlocker 11 Android phone. This article will discuss how this particular phone fared during our tests and whether or not it can compete against its predecessor for your hard earned dollar. NOTE: This review will cover what is known as the GSM version of the phone, as the AT&T version is not unlocked. The E8231s 1 Unlock DC Unlocker 11 has a listed price of $99.99 on-contract on AT&T’s website, though that price has been found to be slashed to as low as $60 on eBay and other third party retailers. It is a price that most customers who want an unlocked alternative will be willing to pay for what it brings to the table. The E8231 is one of the most unique unlocked Android phones on the market, which was probably made famous by its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. With the Skyrocket, users were able to choose between two carrier variants, one with AT&T branding and one with T-Mobile branding. The Skyrocket was also unlocked right out of the box, but it still required that you call AT&T’s customer service center to have it upgraded to an unlocked phone. This time around, Samsung has decided to go another route and offer an unlocked version of their Galaxy S II with no strings attached. As long as you have your phone service on AT&T, it will be unlocked out of the box. Samsung has also taken a lot of steps to make sure that their phones are as close to stock as possible. In addition to the standard Samsung unlocker app, there is a Samsung PC Companion software package available for download from the Android Market. The PC Companion software package allows users to manually set over 80 properties on their phones, including changing some basic system settings and installing additional apps. Another added bonus is the ability to configure a dual-SIM card for separate phone numbers. This can be done via an attached SIM card tray inside of the phone or through the use of SD cards. However, you cannot use both of these methods at the same time, which is a shame. Watch for our upcoming article covering how to set up the Double-SIM feature on the Samsung Galaxy S II E8231s 1 Unlock DC Unlocker 11 phone The unlocked version of this phone does NOT have 3G/4G connectivity enabled on its mobile network. This means that on AT&T, you will only be able to access Edge speeds for data on this device. AT&T’s 3G/4G network is currently not available on this particular model due to unknown reasons. cfa1e77820
