Suetonius, in his work The Twelve Caesars, describes the life of a woman who mystifies us today: "No childhood did she enjoy," he writes. "For at three years old her mother married an elderly husband and the girl bore both the weight of her stepfather and that of a new sibling." This girl was Livia Drusilla, better known as "Livilla," the second wife of Emperor Augustus. As one historian puts it, Livilla was born to be groomed to marry for power -- but she does not appear content with her fate. "How much happier is Julia Augusta than Livilla?" Suetonius asks rhetorically. "Both grew up in the same palace, both were married to the same man, and both had the same father. But Julia's marriage lasted for thirty years, whereas Livilla's husband died after three years." Suetonius makes no further comment on what happened to change one woman's fate so drastically. "En el Vientre Materno", a TV movie written by Mexican film director Guillermo Arriaga, recreates that moment when Livilla's life changed. The story is based on the rumors that circulated around her time in Rome during the early Empire. According to these rumors, Livia manipulated her husband Augustus' wife Julia Augusta by using the unborn child of Livilla's husband Domitius as a tool. In "En el Vientre Materno", Julia falls ill and is diagnosed with hysteria. Unable to bear more children, she writes a suicide note and disappears from Rome. In her place, a maid takes her place as Julia's double - but, as things turn out, the maid bears a son who is raised as the son of Caesar and his first wife -- that boy is Octavian.
